How it works
Botulinum toxin works by temporarily relaxing facial muscles. It blocks nerve signals that tell the muscles to contract, reducing movement in targeted areas. This helps smooth out wrinkles and fine lines caused by repeated facial expressions, like frowning or squinting. Results begin to set in between 3-5 days and treatment can take up to 2 weeks to have full effect. Over time, as the toxin wears off (usually after 3–4 months), muscle activity gradually returns to normal.
What are the side effects?
Treatments are usually very well tolerated. Common side effects include slight discomfort or tenderness at the injection site, mild bruising and headache. Rare side effects include muscle weakness (e.g eyebrow or eyelid droop). Side effects are temporary and last between 2-6 weeks.
Who should not have treatment
Botulinum toxin cannot be administered to those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Clients who have neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis or motor neuron disease should not be treated.
